Conundrum Explanation

I wrote this poem when I was around eighteen and although I've edited it somewhat over the years, it represents my thoughts when I was confronted with blatant racism for the first time living in the dorm of a conservative Christian university located far from civilization on the flat Michigan landscape. These sentiments still ring true for me today. What about you--when did you first experience racism and what was your response?

  1. I remember being called a nigger by a white person at my high school once but I was never sure whether he was joking or not. Regardless it was inappropriate, but I wasn't really hurt by it, just taken aback. My first real encounter was with a cop who stopped and verbally harrassed my friends and I. I recall being floored by the whole concept. It's one thing to read about racism or hear about it, completely another to actually experience it.
